چکیده

Due to advances in fiber-optics and VLSI technology, interconnection networks which allow multiple simultaneous broadcasts are becoming feasible. In such large systems hot-spot contention can occur when several processors concurrently request access to one data structure with resulting severe performance degradation. To minimize the effect of hot-spots in the broadcast architecture, messages are combined to form a new message containing the payloads of all original messages. In this paper, we examine the effect of message combining on the performance of a multiprocessor system based on a broadcast interconnection network using simulation and analytical models under the message-passing paradigm and the presence of hot-spots, and we compare it to similar performance measures on multiprocessor systems based on the crossbar and the torus.

Hot spots on an interconnection network for broadcast communication

Due to advances in fiber-optics and VLSI technology, interconnection networks which allow multiple simultaneous broadcasts are becoming feasible. In such large systems, hot-spot contention can occur when several processing nodes concurrently request access to one data structure with resulting severe performance degradation. This paper presents one broadcast architecture, called the SOME-Bus int...

Avoiding Communication Hot-Spots in Interconnection Networks

In creating interconnection networks for parallel computers an efficient design is crucial because of its impact on the performance. A high speed routing scheme that minimises contention and avoids the formation of hot-spots should be included. We have developed a new method to uniformly balance communication traffic over the interconnection network called Distributed Routing Balancing (DRB) ba...

Routing Strategies and Message Contention on Low-dimensional Interconnection Networks

Non-uniform message distribution in interconnection networks is a common problem and causes network congestion. This paper proves that a careful choice of the routing algorithm can increase signiicantly the communication performance under pathological communication patterns, such as hot spots. A comparison between widely used e-cube routing and a new algorithm based on Computer Graphics line dr...

Hot spot contention and message combining in the simple serial synchronized multistage interconnection network

Simple Serial Synchronized (SSS) Multistage Interconnection Network (MIN) is a novel MIN architecture for connecting processors and memory modules in multiprocessors. Synchronized bit-serial communication simplifies the structure/control, and permits the bit-serial message combining mechanism. From the theoretical analysis and empirical results, it appears that the influence of the hot spot con...

Dynamic Routing Balancing On InfiniBand Networks*

InfiniBand (IBA) technology was developed to address the performance issues associated with messages movement among Endnodes and computer I/O devices. However, InfiniBand is also widely deployed within high performance computing (HPC) clusters due to the high bandwidth and low message latency attributes it offers to inter-processor communication systems. An interconnection-network efficient des...
